The Goose and Cuckoo is a unique pub in every way with a lively tradition, rich in both culture and history. Having survived the pub cull of the teetotal Lady Llanover in the 19th century, lifelong friends and regulars at the Goose – Sue and Rhiannon wanted to keep the pub’s tradition’s alive. They decided to take the pub over in 2015, with a little help from Rhiannon's son Morgan, to continue the culture and traditions which make the Goose such a well-loved pub.
Originally called the New Inn, legend has it that the pub acquired its current name following a row between the two sisters who ran it in the 1880s. One of the sisters was called a “silly old goose” by her sibling and responded by calling her sister “a silly old cuckoo.” The story has been passed down through the years and in 1947 the pub’s name changed from the New Inn to the Goose and Cuckoo. Its affinity with animals lives on. If you're looking for pubs for dogs in South Wales, you're in luck. The Goose is one of the best dog friendly pubs near Abergavenny and has several geese and pet goats living in its grounds.
Affectionately referred to as Goose by Rhiannon, Sue is the life and soul of the pub and makes everyone feel welcome to regulars and newcomers alike.
Affectionately referred to as Cuckoo by Sue, Rhiannon creates the pub’s ever-changing menu of delicious home-cooked food from fresh ingredients, ensuring visitors are well fed and satisfied.
