Sue to run charity canal marathon
One of our landladies – Sue – is calling time on running the pub for one day to run a marathon for a charity which helps African orphans.
Sue will run over 26 miles from the Goose to Brecon along the Monmouthshire and Brecon canal.
The 65-year-old, is aiming to raise money for her daughter-in-law Louise Mitchell and grandson Bailey who hope to travel to Uganda to work with the charity YWAM Uganda, which helps African children who have lost their parents and families to HIV/AIDS.
Louise is a qualified midwife and will be taking medical supplies to several villages which she will use in her work to assist mothers to be and their babies who have HIV/Aids.
“The charity does fantastic work for the children who have lost their parents to this devastating disease,” said Susan.
“These children have absolutely nothing, down to no shoes on their feet and living on the streets.”
As well as helping to get Bailey and Louise to Uganda, any money raised will also go towards other supplies they will be taking with them to aid the children such as school shoes, football kits, football boots, old laptops and unlocked phones to aid their school work.
“I like running, but like most crazy ideas I have, the idea to run to Brecon along the canal was dreamed up in the pub!” said Sue.
“I haven’t trained as much as I’d like, but the pain I’ll endure is nothing like that experienced by those we are trying to help and will be worth it if we manage to raise enough funds for them.”
As well as the run, collections and raffles in aid of YWAM Uganda will be held over the Easter weekend at the Goose and Cuckoo and at the pub’s annual music and beer festival Goose Fest on April 30th.
“We are having Easter Egg hunts on Easter Saturday and Sunday from noon,” said Sue, “so we will have raffles and a collection at those as well as Goose Fest.
“All the money raised will go straight to the people in Uganda who need it the most.”
